In my utopia, people would be able to step into each other’s shoes. In our current society, polarization and a lack of understanding have led to a breakdown in communication and empathy. To address this, I photographed shoes belonging to people about whom we might hold preconceived ideas. Shoeboxes would be placed in different locations throughout the city, and people could step inside them to hear testimonies from individuals whose shoes were photographed. To further visualize this concept, I created a website that allows users to scroll through different pairs of shoes, each with its own unique story. My hope is that by stepping into someone else’s shoes, we can begin to better understand each other and overcome the barriers that divide us. In this way, my utopia represents a world in which empathy and understanding are the foundation of our interactions.
